Eco-Friendly Hardwood Flooring Options

It’s been often said that our forests are the ‘lungs’ of our planet.  It naturally follows that exploitation due to over-harvesting of our forests in an attempt to satisfy increasing human consumption places our diminishing global forests at real risk.

At Woodsmith Hardwood Floors, we take considerable pride in the fact that the very nature of our business inherently supports and strengthens eco-conscious and sustainable choices. We are proud to offer options for Eco-Friendly Hardwood Flooring in Vancouver and throughout the Lower Mainland.

A decision to keep your existing hardwood floors and refinish them wherever possible has a direct and positive impact on alleviating the pressure placed upon our diminishing forests.  It’s a choice we can both be proud of.

Woodsmith Hardwood Floors and OUR HEALTH

(We use the word ‘Our’ in reference not only to you and your family and pet’s health, but the health of our employees as well.)

Carpet Risks

According to the CMHC (Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation) molds growing inside homes, often captured in carpet, release chemicals and spores. Health experts indicate that molds can cause allergic reactions and illness. Pregnant women, infants, the elderly and those with respiratory disease or a weakened immune system are more at risk when exposed to mold.

In many cases, removing carpet and/or repairing areas of rotting wood are the only way a homeowner can guarantee the elimination of interior mold.

Dust Concerns

Traditional sanding, not employing a dustless system, poses obvious respiratory health risks not only to homeowners but to our employees as well.

Airborne dust and sanded finish particles can remain in the breathable air of a home for days and weeks after the initial sanding is complete.

It’s for this specific reason Woodsmith Hardwood Floors utilizes dust containment systems on all of our projects.  Our primary sanding system utilizes industrial-grade cyclone technology that effectively quarantines dust created at the source (beneath the sanding belts) and directs it into a portable, sealed drum. Secondary systems such as buffers and edgers use similar systems and allow virtually no dust to become airborne.

Low-VOC Finish Solutions

As discussed in more detail in our section about  “Hardwood Floor Finishes ” we at Woodsmith Hardwood Floors are committed to providing hard, durable finishes that are on the forefront of low-V.O.C. (i.e. low-solvent) technology.

Low-V.O.C. 2-component water-based finishes continue to be the option increasingly chosen by discerning homeowners concerned about their health and the health of their children and pets.

Knowing that water-based finishes typically provide a healthier option while delivering a harder, more durable finish than most oil-based finishes, an increasing number of our customers are finding this to be a choice truly without compromise.
