Every year, House & Home magazine invites its readers to send pictures of their best looking spaces and the stories behind them as part of their annual design contest.
Out of literally hundreds of submissions from across Canada, this home in North Vancouver received First Place recognition for ‘Best House’.
Described as a “dramatic transformation” of a “dated fixer-upper into a modern family home”, Woodsmith Hardwood Floors was privileged to be a part of this remarkable project.
Challenges
There were two primary challenges posed by the vintage oak floors in this mid-century rancher.
The first was the fact that they were heavily coated with years-upon-years of wax build-up which made it difficult not only to sand but initially, to even envision the floor’s potential.
The second would be finding matching flooring to fill in the renovated kitchen space as this was an open-concept plan and maintaining continuity with the original floors was essential.
Solutions
The client’s confidence was established early on via a proof-of-concept demonstration before the project commenced. This was accomplished by test-sanding using our dustless system and staining an area of the living room, which afforded the home owners the opportunity to envision the excellent end-result before committing to it.
Matching new oak flooring was sourced from a local supplier and custom installed and stained creating a fluid design-space throughout the home.
This was a project that benefited immensely from the talent and vision of the home owners.
When Woodsmith Hardwood Floors performed the initial consultation, the house was gutted to the studs. Who would have thought that a project with such humble (and daunting) beginnings could win first place!
