Maintaining Your Hardwood Floors
It is important to properly maintain your hardwood floors to keep them long lasting and looking their best. There are several important tips for properly maintaining your floors:
Place bristle welcome-mats or other types of durable welcome-mats at the entrances to your home. These will effectively help to remove dirt and grit from shoes before they enter your home. Dirt, dust and grit are abrasives that will wear away at the finish of your hardwood floors. Using runners or area rugs in high-traffic areas are also recommended.
Avoid wearing high heels or outdoor shoes on your hardwood floors.
Use protective felt pads on the bottom of all furniture and chairs. Clean and replace these felt pads periodically to reduce the build-up of dirt and grit that will gradually collect on them over time. (Avoid dragging chairs, stools or appliances across your floor.)
Do not wax your floors.
Do not use abrasive cleaners such as chlorine bleach, ammonia, and pine or oil soap on your hardwood floors.
If spills occur, wipe them up immediately using a damp (not soaking wet) cloth or paper towel.
If you have pets, maintain their nails to minimize scratching.
Use adequately sized waterproof saucers under all potted plants to avoid water damage to your hardwood floors.
Routine Maintenance
Vacuum and sweep your hardwood floors regularly to keep them free of dust and dirt – be sure to use a soft-bristle broom or vacuum extension. (Do not use a rotating power-head.)
Use a certified hardwood floor maintenance kit like the one we provide you after refinishing your floors. Buff the floor dry immediately after cleaning with a clean dry cloth. Never pour the solution directly onto your hardwood floor.
With these tips, your floors should last a lot longer and look gorgeous for years to come.
